What Is TMJ Disorder?

When researching causes of a painful jaw, you may have come across terms such as temporomandibular disorders, TMD, and TMJ disorders, and wondered what the difference is between these seemingly similar phrases. The simple answer is they all refer to dysfunction of the temporomandibular joint in the jaw - in other words, the hinge joints on either side of the jaw that allow you to open and close your mouth.

Excellent experience. The staff and doctors treat you like a person and not a number. My dentist spent a long time getting to know me before doing the dental work. Very satisfied with the results.

Evaluation

During your initial consultation, Dr. Pinnix or Dr. Betancourt will discuss your symptoms and how long you have experienced issues, review your medical history, and evaluate your bite.

Digital Imaging

Using our advanced 3-D Cone Beam Computerized Tomography (CBCT) system, our doctors will take detailed images of the tissue around your jaw to determine the extent of damage to your TMJ. These images will provide our dentists with the information they need to properly determine the best treatment option for your particular case.

Treatment

The treatment method selected to best address your TMD will be custom-tailored to your unique needs. Generally, TMD is treated with an occlusal splint or a night guard. In cases of TMD caused by a dental misalignment, Invisalign® may be recommended to help realign your bite.
