TMJ Treatment

Temporomandibular joint (TMJ) issues can lead to uncomfortable symptoms, including inflammation, facial pain, jaw pain, and headaches.

At Advanced Dentistry of Blakeney in Charlotte, NC, our dentists offer TMJ treatment to alleviate painful jaw joint issues.

Learn how Dr. John M. Pinnix IV and Dr. George A. Betancourt can address the symptoms of TMJ disorders.

What Exactly Is TMJ Disorder?

When researching causes of a painful jaw, you may have come across terms such as temporomandibular disorders, TMD, and TMJ disorders, and wondered what the difference is between these seemingly similar phrases.

The answer is they all refer to dysfunction of the temporomandibular joint in the jaw. In other words, the hinge joints on either side of the jaw that allow you to open and close your mouth.

You Can Alleviate the Dangers of TMD by Seeking TMJ Treatment

There's no better time than the present to seek TMD care. If you're hesitant about needing assistance from our dentists, it can help to know exactly what we can prevent, including:

Broken Teeth

Unfortunately, the consistent force exerted on your teeth by regular clenching can actually lead to breakage. From cracks to chips, the solutions can be stressful and costly. With treatment, though, they're entirely preventable.

Worn Teeth

When patients come in for cleanings, we can often tell if they have a TMD due to the wear on their enamel. Fortunately, TMJ disorder is treatable — and our team is here to help you, not judge you.

Root Canal Infections

Did you know that bruxism from TMJ dysfunction can eventually require root canal therapy? That's because the structural trauma that it creates can also lead to an infection within the pulp of your tooth.

We Truly Care About All of Our Patients

"Hands down, the most comfortable I've ever felt at a dentist office. I came in with lots of anxiety and fear,  knowing I have a lot of work that needs to be done. They immediately made me feel safe, comfortable, and did not shame me for how my teeth looked! We quickly came up with a plan and I left feeling super confident and excited to come back and get started! He even took my anxiety into consideration...I highly recommend." Whitney Meacham

When you visit Dr. Pinnix and Dr. Betancourt, you aren't just seeing dentists who can alleviate your temporomandibular disorder. You're also choosing a team that can directly address the root cause and consequences of temporomandibular joint problems like dental damage. Causes range from arthritis to an imbalanced bite so we'll take our time to correctly diagnose the issue.

Regarding the effects, we can conceal worn enamel and chips with options like dental bonding or veneers. Or, if you need more comprehensive aesthetic help, we can plan a smile makeover. For patients concerned with the structure or integrity of their teeth, we can also place a crown or recommend other restorative treatments.

In other words: even if you do have damage from TMJ problems, you've found a team that can address both the cause and the symptoms.
