TMJ disorder often involves the inflammation of the jaw joints. Dr. John M. Pinnix IV has specialized training in this area, and he provides conservative, yet effective care to relieve the often debilitating pain. Typically, he will begin with oral splints and night guards, which can realign your bite and relieve jaw pain. More invasive treatment can be arranged, if needed.
If you suffer with dental anxiety, or need a lengthy treatment, we offer various types of sedation, including nitrous oxide and oral conscious sedation. IV sedation is highly effective, and Dr. Betancourt is among the 1.5 percent of dentists in North Carolina licensed to use this type of sedation. We can also provide general anesthesia, which causes complete unconsciousness during treatment.
Obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) is a fairly common condition that causes your tongue and soft palate to block your airways while you sleep. Before beginning treatment for this condition, your dentist will have you participate in a sleep study. If you are diagnosed with OSA, he will provide a custom-crafted mouthpiece that repositions soft tissues and prevents them from obstructing breathing.
Although our dentists will always try to save your tooth, in some cases, extraction becomes necessary. Our dentists excel at performing virtually painless tooth extraction. In addition to extractions of unhealthy teeth, we also offer wisdom tooth extraction. We will take every measure to maintain your comfort, and can replace your tooth using dental implants and other advanced solutions.
Symptoms of oral cancer include lesions on the soft tissues, red and white patches on the gums, and bleeding. We use the advanced Vizilite® system to detect suspect tissue abnormalities. When oral cancer is detected in its earliest stages, it is easier to treat. If you have not undergone an oral cancer screening in the last year, schedule a consultation with us.
Scaling and root planing are the most common and effective treatments for gum disease, which occurs when bacteria gather in pockets below your gum line. As they accumulate, they may cause your gums to pull away from your teeth and roots, leading to a receding gum line and eventual tooth loss. Our dentists will carefully remove the bacterial pockets, setting the stage for improved oral health.
Root canal therapy can salvage a tooth affected by advanced decay. During root canal therapy, we will remove the infected pulp from within your tooth, and restore it with a dental crown. We use rotary hand pieces and anesthesia to make the procedure virtually painless. We can often perform root canal therapy in a single visit, although you may need two appointments if you require antibiotic treatment.
We use the DIAGNOdent laser cavity detection tool, which can detect the earliest signs of decay with 90 percent accuracy. If any decay is present, it will appear fluorescent and the device will make a beeping sound. The system will also produce a digital readout, which will indicate the amount of decay present. The exam is quick and comfortable.
