A healthy smile is more than just a good set of teeth. Periodontal health is just as important to consider. The team at our Charlotte restorative dentistry center offer patients plenty of treatments for periodontal disease and gum recession, though prevention is generally the best medicine.

With this in mind, we would like to go over some of the most common causes of poor gum health. We'll also offer some tips on how to address these issues and keep your smile as healthy as possible.

Poor Oral Hygiene

When someone doesn't brush their teeth or floss regularly, this increases the risk of tooth decay, acidic erosion, gum disease, and gum recession. Be sure to brush your teeth at least twice a day and to floss your teeth at least once a night. Ideally you should consider brushing and flossing after every meal.

Brushing and Flossing Aggressively

Believe it or not, there's a wrong way to brush and floss your teeth. If you are too brusque or aggressive while cleaning your teeth, you can damage the gum tissue and affect the health of your gumline. Be gentle and thorough when brushing and flossing, and be sure to use a toothbrush with soft bristles.

Teeth Grinding (Bruxism)

Teeth grinding refers to the gnashing, shifting, and clenching of the teeth a person may do while they are asleep. This can result in sore teeth, damage to tooth structure, and even gum recession. If you suspect that you suffer from teeth grinding, make sure to contact your dentist as soon as possible so these matters can be addressed ASAP.

Smoking and Chewing Tobacco

Smoking and chewing tobacco can lead to many different health problems, including heart disease, lung disease, and different kinds of cancers. In addition, tobacco products can result in periodontal disease, gum recession, oral cancer, and many other serious dental heath conditions. Consider this another compelling reason to kick the habit for good.

Poor Diet and Nutrition

You really are what you eat. If your diet consists primarily of junk food and soda, this can lead to an increased risk of tooth decay as well as periodontal disease and gum disease. Try to eat a diet rich in fresh fruits and vegetables, and make sure to stay hydrated by drinking water throughout the day.

Diabetes

Diabetics often suffer from a variety of health issues as a result of the condition. For instance, diabetics tend to run a higher risk of gum disease as well as tooth decay. If you are a diabetic, be sure to properly manage your diabetes and be attentive with regard to your blood sugar.

Changes in Hormones

Hormones can change quite a bit during adolescence, pregnancy, and menopause, which increases a person's risk of developing gum disease. Since these hormonal changes are just a normal part of life, be sure to practice good oral hygiene at all times.

Genetics and Family History

Some people are simply more prone to gum disease and dental problems as a result of their genetics. Good oral hygiene and regular visits to the dentist can help prevent and manage serious issues with tooth decay and gum disease.
